The Natural Beauty of Lucerne
Lucerne is a city that is truly blessed with natural beauty. At the heart of the city lies Lake Lucerne, which is surrounded by the majestic Alps. You can spend time on the lake with a leisurely boat ride, or soak in the views from many of the lake side cafes.
Mount Pilatus is a popular hiking destination, where the summit offers amazing views of the lake below. If the hike is too challenging, there’s the option of taking a cog railway to the top (that’s what we did!). Either way you get to the top the views are well worth the trip!
If you’re looking for a more leisurely way to enjoy the natural beauty of Lucerne, then a stroll along the iconic Chapel Bridge is a must. This covered wooden bridge spans the Reuss River and offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains. It is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe. As you walk through the bridge you are able to view a series paintings that depict the city’s history. The bridge is lined with vibrant flowers and is a popular spot for taking photos. And while the bridge is beautiful during the day, it is just as brilliant at night.
Top Attractions in Lucerne – Lion Monument and Musegg Wall
Lucerne is home to a number of top attractions that showcase the city’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Here are some of the must-visit attractions in Lucerne:
Lion Monument
The Lion Monument is a stunning sculpture that is carved into a natural rock face. The sculpture depicts a dying lion and is dedicated to the Swiss Guards who were killed during the French Revolution. Note the rich symbolism: behind the lion is the intact shield of the Swiss coat of arms, and he rests on top of a broken shield with the fleur-de-lis of the French royalty.
This monument is a powerful symbol of the city’s history and if you plan to visit, leave enough time to sit and reflect and enjoy its enormity and beauty.
Musegg Wall
The Musegg Wall is a medieval fortification from the 14th century that surrounds the old town of Lucerne, it was part of the city’s defenses. The wall features nine towers, each of which offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding landscape. You can take a leisurely walk along the wall and explore the city’s rich history. The Musegg Wall and Männli, Zyt, Wacht and Schirmer Towers are open to the public from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. between 1 April and 1 November.

For those who love culture and history, there are plenty of museums, galleries, and theaters to explore. My favorite art take was the Rosengart Collection with a mix of classic Modernist and Impressionist works of art. Due to the Rosengart’s family friendship with Picasso, there’s a collection of over 30 of his paintings along with his water colors and sculptural work. You will also find works from Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet and Henri Matisse.
One of the most popular cultural attractions in Lucerne is the Richard Wagner Museum. The museum is dedicated to the life and work of the famous German composer, who spent a significant amount of time in Lucerne in his manor house lakeside in Lucerne’s Tribschen district. Visitors can explore the composer’s life and legacy through a variety of exhibits and displays. You will also find the Erard piano on which he composed many of his masterpieces.
Other popular museums in Lucerne include:
- Museum of History Lucerne
- Museum of Art Lucerne
- Natural History Museum
- Swiss Museum of Transport

Tips for Visiting Lucerne
Here are some tips for traveling to Lucerne:
Currency
Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc (CHF) as its currency. Visitors should be aware that Switzerland is an expensive destination, and prices for accommodation, food, and activities can be high.
Language
The official languages of Switzerland are German, French, Italian, and Romansh. English is widely spoken in Lucerne, and on your visit you should have no trouble communicating with locals. When visiting I found it amazing how many languages were spoken, and I was inspired to learn a new language for my next visit!
Weather
While Lucerne has a moderate climate, with warm summers and cold winters, the weather can be unpredictable at all times of year. When visiting you should be prepared for all types of weather! We travelled there in the fall and found the weather mostly pleasant. We packed lots of layers for our trek up Mt Pilatus expecting severe cold, but once above the clouds the sun made the extra layers unnecessary. Again, be prepared for everything and you will enjoy!
