Mount Fuji: Japan’s iconic symbol

Mount Fuji, standing at an impressive 3,776 meters, is not only the tallest mountain in Japan but also an enduring symbol of the nation’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Its perfectly symmetrical cone shape has been celebrated in art, literature, and folklore for centuries, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through Japan. As you approach Mt. Fuji during your tour, the sight of its snow-capped peak rising majestically against the sky is likely to evoke a sense of wonder and admiration, a moment that is often described as spiritual by visitors.

The mountain is surrounded by five beautiful lakes, part of the Fuji Five Lakes region, which offers stunning views and numerous recreational opportunities. Each season reveals a different facet of its charm—cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and a magnificent winter landscape. This natural spectacle draws thousands of visitors year-round, making it a cherished location for both locals and tourists alike.

Beyond its visual allure, Mount Fuji holds deep cultural significance for the Japanese people. It has been a site of pilgrimage for centuries, revered in Shinto and Buddhist traditions and affectionately referred to as Fuji-San . Numerous shrines and temples dot the landscape around the mountain, each telling stories of devotion and reverence. As your tour guide shares these stories, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for not only the mountain’s beauty but also its role in the spiritual and cultural identity of Japan.

Exploring Hakone: A gateway to natural beauty

Hakone, located just a short distance from Tokyo, is renowned for its stunning landscapes, hot springs, and the majestic views of Mt. Fuji. This picturesque area is often considered the gateway to Japan’s natural beauty, making it a perfect complement to your visit to Mt. Fuji. The charm of Hakone lies in its diverse attractions, including lush forests, serene lakes, and breathtaking mountain scenery.

Hakone offers a variety of outdoor activities that showcase its natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails that meander through the mountains, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Additionally, Lake Ashi provides opportunities for boat rides, where you can take in the stunning scenery from the water while keeping an eye out for the iconic silhouette of Mt. Fuji in the distance.

Itinerary and activities

The itinerary of a full-day tour from Tokyo will be carefully crafted to ensure you experience the best of both Mt. Fuji and Hakone. A typical day begins with an early morning departure from Tokyo, where you’ll meet your guide or group.  Regardless of the type of tour you choose, your guide will share interesting facts and stories about the sights you pass, setting the tone for an enriching experience.

Upon arrival at Mt. Fuji, the first stop is often the 5th Station, where you can take in the breathtaking views and snap photos of the majestic peak. Depending on the season, you may even see cherry blossoms or vibrant autumn leaves, adding to the visual splendor of the moment. Unfortunately for my tour in January the 5th station was closed because of snow!  However do not let that deter you, according to my guide, the winter months are the best opportunity to see Fuji on a clear day as there is less humidity and you more likely to see Mount Fuji in all its glory against a blue sky.

Owakudani Hot Springs a stop on our tour of Mt Fuji

Owakudani Hot Springs

My Mount Fuju tour took us to the Hakone Ropeway and we disembarked at Owakudani, where we had stunning views of an active volcanic landscape (including the sulfur smell!). This area is famous for its “kuro tamago,” or “black eggs,” which are boiled in the mineral-rich volcanic hot springs. The shells turn black due to sulfur from the valley. There’s a local belief that eating one of these eggs can increase your life expectancy by seven years.

We then rode the ropeway to Ashi lake.  The ropeway offers stunning views of Mount Fuji. At Ashi lake we boarded a “Pirate” ship for a scenic tour.  After the tour we took the bullet train back to Tokyo.

Tips for a successful Mount Fuji tour experience

To make the most of your tour from Tokyo, there are several tips to consider that can enhance your experience. First and foremost, wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes, as you will be walking and exploring various locations throughout the day. Layering is advisable, as temperatures can vary significantly, especially at higher elevations like those found around Mt. Fuji. Being prepared for changing weather conditions will ensure you remain comfortable and focused on enjoying the sights.

If you are planning on doing a group tour, arriving at the meeting point on time is crucial to ensure a smooth start to your tour. Most tours operate on a tight schedule, and late arrivals can disrupt the itinerary for everyone. Familiarize yourself with the meeting location in advance and plan to arrive early. This will give you time to check in, grab a snack, and settle in before the journey begins.

Lastly, don’t forget to bring your phone/camera! The landscapes around Mt. Fuji and Hakone are incredibly photogenic, and you’ll want to capture the breathtaking views and memorable moments along the way. Consider bringing a portable charger for your devices, as you may find yourself taking more photos than anticipated. Engaging with fellow travelers and sharing your experiences can enhance the journey, so be open to conversations and connections throughout the day.
